Cyclosportives in France
The ‘Etape du Tour’ gets all the publicity, but is in fact only one of many mass-participation cycling events in Europe, and it’s certainly not the
hardest. There are roughly 140 events held in different parts of France throughout the year. Like the Etape they are all timed circuits where ‘diplomas’
of Gold, Silver, and Bronze are awarded for specific time limits and age categories.

Cyclosportives all share the same central theme but each one is unique in character and local charm. They are all brilliantly organised, with police escorts, mechanical assistance, food stops and even drugs testing, and local legends like Raymond Poullidor will wave you off as you try and stay upright amongst a melee of pumped-up cyclists. |

The vocal locals will cheer you on as you charge through their villages, offering you anything from a spray from a hose to a glass of the red stuff.
Occasionally you may even catch a glimpse of an ex-pro gliding effortlessly up one of the many ball-breaking climbs.
There's always plenty of banter between riders and international relations are done no harm as you work together to get a good time. And when
eventually you finish, having dodged the wild boar and made a few new friends along the way, it's time for tea and medals. |
Please note, it is possible to enter these events FREE as part of a booked training week, or as priced for a fly-and-ride weekend. Prices start as low as £99/weekend specials where indicated. This includes entry, accommodation, food and wine, transport etc. The only thing you have to do is get here.
